You can look strong while living in a way you cannot sustain. That is the problem I wanted to discuss in this episode.
The work keeps expanding. The partying keeps going. Every quiet moment gets filled with another screen, another message or another comparison with somebody apparently doing better than you. Eventually, pushing harder becomes your answer to everything.
At some point, you have to ask what all that pressure is doing to the person carrying it.
Mental bankruptcy
I used the phrase mental bankruptcy to describe a pattern I had seen. A man seems vigorous and capable. He keeps drawing on himself as though there is no limit. Then the energy that made him look unstoppable is no longer there.
This is a description of a pattern, not a diagnosis. The point is that looking capable does not mean your way of living is working indefinitely.
It is easy to admire intensity without looking at its cost. A demanding job, constant stimulation and very little room to recover can become normal simply because everybody around you is doing something similar.
Normal in your circle does not necessarily mean sensible for you.
What makes you want to get up?
Another distinction in the episode is between dragging yourself through the day and wanting to engage with it.
I compared the latter with waking up on Christmas morning as a child. You did not need an elaborate argument about discipline to get out of bed. There was something you wanted to do.
That is a useful question to bring back into adult life. What are you working towards that means something to you? How much of the day is driven by that, and how much is spent reacting to demands you have never examined?
You cannot expect every task to be exciting. But if the entire arrangement produces only dread, another motivational speech may be avoiding the larger question.
A deliberate beginning and end
The practical idea I introduced was a short period of deliberate reflection at the beginning and end of the day. I described it as a mental workout and said it had helped me through difficult periods in my own life.
The full seven-part routine was the subject of a separate report being prepared at the time. This August 2021 episode introduces that project and the reasons behind it.
The worthwhile starting point is the decision to pay attention before your day becomes a blur of other people's priorities. Notice how you are living. Notice what repeatedly drains you. Give the questions enough room to produce an honest answer.
Mental toughness should not become a slogan that prevents you acknowledging a problem. If your idea of strength requires you to ignore everything happening to you, you have made it impossible to adjust.
You have a life to live, not an image of invincibility to maintain.
