Podcast 29. I am talking about the dark hustler. The description I use is specific. A bit of a masochist, and a bit of a psychopath, and still happy. Those traits sound like they should cancel each other. In the men who actually last in this work, they sit together.
The masochist part is the willingness to take the pain of the process and come back the next day. Rejection, embarrassment, the boring hours of approaches that go nowhere. If you need every session to feel good, you will quit at the first honest week. The other part is colder. You cannot be so tender about every outcome that a no wrecks your week. You need some distance from the hit, or the hit runs you.
Yin and yang is the picture I use, and I mean it as a working description, not as a poster. Light and dark in the same man. If you only have the cold side, you become unpleasant and women feel it. If you only have the soft side, you feel everything and you stop approaching. The dark hustler is the man who can absorb the pain, stay a little detached from the scoreboard, and still enjoy his life while he does it.
This episode is that paradox. I am not asking you to become cruel. I am describing the temperament that survives the field without turning bitter or soft. The cover is low light on purpose. The subject is the part of the work men prefer to skip when they only want the pleasant story.
Hold both. Take the hits. Do not let the hits become your personality. Stay happy anyway. That combination is rarer than any opener.
