Number three: the Philippines
Tony starts with Cebu, where he has lived. His focus is everyday city life rather than a beach holiday: places to eat, streets to explore and opportunities to meet people.
He discusses Mango Avenue and IT Park as starting points for researching a night out. But having a list of bars is only useful if you actually go out and talk to someone. Knowing where people meet does not replace making a conversation.
The distance from home is part of the decision. If you want to visit family regularly, think about how that fits into the life you are choosing. Being excited about a destination and enjoying living far from home are different questions.
Number two: Cambodia
The Cambodia section centres on Phnom Penh. Tony looks at a simpler lifestyle built around local food, an apartment and a social routine, rather than hotels and a holiday budget.

A trial stay has to include the boring parts. Can you sleep well, get your work done and build a routine? Two weeks of drinking can be a good holiday without telling you much about whether you would enjoy living there.
Number one: Guatemala
Guatemala takes first place in Tony's ranking for someone coming from the US. Staying closer to home is part of that choice, rather than an assumption that everyone wants the same destination.
