You travel to another country, see women you would love to meet and come home with a beautifully prepared explanation for why nothing happened. They didn't speak English. The local guys had it easier. What were you supposed to do?
Well, you could have tried meeting them.
I have had interactions where we could barely discuss the weather. That experience made me question how much of what men call a language problem is really a confidence problem. When you depend on an elaborate conversation to feel comfortable, losing that conversation feels like losing your entire game.
What survives when the words disappear?
Your expression, eye contact, posture and whether you look comfortable being there still communicate something. So does your willingness to make an effort. If you immediately crumble because she speaks limited English, she can see that too.
This doesn't mean language is irrelevant to understanding another person. You need to understand each other sufficiently to know what you are agreeing to. If you cannot establish that, slow down, translate or leave it there. A smile is not an agreement to something she hasn't understood.
What you don't need is fluent small talk before you can introduce yourself. Start with something simple. See whether she wants to engage. Make the interaction easy enough that both of you can participate.
A beginner often thinks the task is to produce the perfect sentence. The harder task is to stay present when the conversation doesn't follow the script in his head.
Ask a question she can answer
In the episode I suggest replacing "Do you speak English?" with "How good is your English?"
The first question can end the conversation before it begins. Somebody with basic English may simply say no because she doesn't consider herself an English speaker. The second gives her room to explain. Perhaps she understands a little. Perhaps she is better than she thinks. Now you have something to work with.
The wording isn't a trick for getting around a refusal. If she doesn't want to talk, that is the end of it. It is a way to avoid creating a language exam where an introduction would do.
Learn some of her language as well. A few ordinary phrases, a greeting and a little humour can show that you have made an effort. You don't need a perfect accent to make somebody laugh with you. A phrasebook on the flight is already more useful than complaining for a week after you land.
Don't confuse a holiday with practice
There is another trap here. You go drinking, wake up late, go to the gym, sit in a cafe answering emails and finally think about meeting women near the end of the day. Then it is time to go drinking again.
You may have a lovely holiday. But don't blame the language for the practice you never did.
Keep a simple process and make time to use it. The Straight Line Sex System is designed around a small amount of material you can learn and repeat. That matters even more when you cannot hide in endless conversation.
Before your next trip, learn a few useful phrases and decide when you will actually go out. Once you are there, pay attention to the person in front of you. You are trying to meet a woman, not pass a translation exam.
